On arrival, your guide will show you the world renowned site where Ramses II (1290-1223 B.C), ordered two sun temples carved from the limestone mountains. In front of the Great temple of Ra-Harakhte and Amon-Re, there are four famous colossal statues of Ramses II, sit majestically staring out across the desert, over 20 meters high each. While in front of the small temple, there are six massive standing statues of Queen Nefertari, favorite wife of Ramses II, each 10 meters high. The small temple dedicated to the cow-headed goddess Hathor of love and Music.
The Abu Simbel complex was relocated in its entirety between 1964-8, on an artificial hill made from a domed structure, high above the Aswan High Dam reservoir. The relocation of the temples was necessary or they would have been submerged in the Lake Nasser created after the building of the Aswan High Dam in 1960-70.
